What's a Pergola? First used in Italy in the 1600's Pergolas are Gazebo-like structures, but without a closed roof, forming a shaded open-air structure additionally shaded by the pillars that support cross beams with an open lattice work on top. Often grape vines and other vines are trained to adorn the Pergola. Pargolas may also form building-extensions, or sun protection on an open patio, deck, or terrace.
